Lake Anne SUP Triathlon Race Description

Inspired by the success and vibe of the Cardboard Boat Regatta, CORE Foundation, Surf Reston, New Trail Cycling, and Lake Anne Brew House have joined forces to bring the inaugural Lake Anne SUP Tri to Reston on Sunday, September 15, 2019!  This event is designed to introduce multi-sport to the community, replacing the traditional swim with a stand up paddle board (SUP) experience.    A race of this kind has NEVER been done!  Thank you for being part of history in the making!
The event will consist of:
  • 5k 2-lap run around Lake Anne on the Reston pathway
  • 1 mile paddle board (paddle boards are provided)
  • 7 mile ride on a New Trail Cycling stationary bike
This will be followed by a post Party with Purpose celebration at Lake Anne Plaza! Proceeds will benefit CORE Foundation, a 501(c)3, which has helped those in need in our community since 2006.  
Athletes may choose to compete solo or as a 3-person relay.  The cost of the event is $110 for solo athletes and includes:  

Relay Athletes:  $ 220 - includes all of the above for each person (t-shirts are not guaranteed if registered after August 26th)

Participants, Volunteers and Spectators have the chance to bid on spectacular silent auction items including:  Disney Tickets, Total Wine wine tasting, athletic gear, race registrations, dining experiences, a Lake Anne painting and more.   The auction is OPEN for bidding and closes at 2:00 pm on race day.  You do not need to be in attendance to win.  


Racers aged 16 on December 31st and older may enter.  

Age group awards will be offered as follows: 24 and Under, 25–29, 30–39, 40–49, 50–59, Over 60 plus Relay Awards.

  • Best Relay Team Name/Theme/Outfit
  • Best Waterfront Cheering Squad
  • Man/Woman Overboard Award (Most time spent in the water!)
  • Individual who collected the most pairs of shoes!
  • You can also help out by bringing your used athletic shoes to packet pick-up to be recycled. $1 per pair will go toward CORE's shoe drive initiative helping kids be healthy and active.

Frequently Asked Questions

Run:  All athletes will start the run together seeded by run pace.   You will line yourself up by your per mile pace as follows:  under 7 minutes, 7-9 minutes, 9-11 minutes, 11-13 minutes and over 13 minutes.   If you are a 10:30 pace for example, you will seed yourself at the back to the 9-11 group.    

The first group (under 7 minutes) will be brought to the top of the stairs by the plaza to the starting line.  PLEASE GO UP THE STAIRS SLOWLY. Timing will not begin until you cross the timing mat at the top of the stairs.   The course is a 2 -laps. There will be signs guiding you along the course. When you begin your second lap. On your first lap, go to the left of the finish line.  Pay attention … If you cross the timing mat at the finish line, you will be disqualified from awards.   

There will be a water station on the run course at the plaza right before you start the second loop prior to the stairs.  Again, please slow down and go slowly up the stairs.

Transition:   Your transition between events is NOT timed. Feel free to use the restroom or grab water.  Enjoy the journey.  Many of you have asked to be paired with a friend and this is your chance! 

After you cross the finish line of the run, you have the choice of paddling or biking next.   You will check in at the bike or SUP line start and you will be guided through that heat by a volunteer.    

Stationary Bike - You will be directed to a bike as soon as one becomes available.  A volunteer will assist you if needed with your pedal and seat adjustment.  Please wear tennis shoes or bring your own bike shoes:  SPD or look bike brand which are compatible with New Trail Cycling's pedals.   If you wear tennis shoes, shoe cages for the bike are provided.    You may bring a water bottle to this station.  You will be riding 7 miles as fast as possible.   As you are approaching 7 miles, notify a volunteer so that they stop the timer when you hit 7 miles. Keep an eye on your time!  

Paddle Board:   After checking to the paddle board line, you will be guided to the life jacket station.  You may bring your own life jacket and paddle but are responsible for securing them in between events. After being fitted, you will be guided to the next available paddle board.   A volunteer will assist you with boarding on your knees. Once you are safely away from the dock, you may stand.

Please make sure your race number is visible so the timing company can see you.   Your time will start when you cross the 2nd light post. Paddle to the back of the lake around circling the drainage tank.  If you run into an issue in the water, we will have boats and life guards in the water to assist you.   

When you complete your SUP and cross the in water finish line, your time will be logged at that point.  Please then move to a kneeling position and go to the right. Wait for a volunteer to call you to the dock and approach on your knees. If you are a slow paddle boarder or new to SUP, please consider paddle boarding last.   

Once you have completed your bike or paddle you will move to your next heat.   Once you’ve completed all 3 heats, please go to the finish line, hand in your chip, take a photo, and receive your SUP Cup, finish line food and beverage ticket.   Be sure to grab your transition bag as soon as your race is finished and visit SUP Village.  

Relay:  Relay athletes - Your runner will be wearing the race bib which contains your timing chip.  All relay members will go together to be body marked.  The runner will wear the timing chip.  The paddle boarder will wear the bib # and the biker will use body marking to identify their number.  Relays will start all 3 legs at the same time.  If a relay team is only using 2 participants, start with the run.   Athletes will have one packet at packet pick-up with all swag for the team included.  

Post-Race Swag:  Please take your race bib to the finishline when you have completed all 3 events to receive your SUP cup with swag and medal.   Relays need to go together.  The volunteer will remove the tag on the bottom of your race bib.  

Post race party convenes at LABH.   Your first beverage of choice is free with ticket.   Refills will be offered at $ 5.  Be sure to take time to visit all of our fantastic sponsors (listed below) in SUP village.  

Parking:  Please park in the main lot on North Shore and North Village Road.  Overflow parking will be along North Shore.   

Race Morning Tips:  LABH will be open at 8:30 on race day serving coffee and breakfast items for purchase.  Please bring cash and send your visitors to this spot for the best viewing. Feel free to bring a lawn chair.  Relax, hydrate and put on your timing chip and race bib!  If you forget your timing chip, you are disqualified from awards and your run time will not be timed.  You will be responsible for mailing your timing chip in post-race to CORE Foundation.  

Transition:  Transition will be a tent bag drop check.   A blue bag sponsored by Glen Bralley with McClean Mortgage will be provided to you, and anything left in the transition tent should fit in that bag.  Glen’s team will check your bag.   The transition area will be secure, but please do not leave valuables in your bag.   It is not required that you use transition tent.  This is optional.   In your transition bag, you might include, a small towel, optional delta look or SPD cycling shoes, and a water bottle.   Transitions will not be considered in scoring. 

No refunds, transfers, or deferrals are permitted for this event.

This event is sanctioned by USAT as a non-traditional race.

Saturday, September 14th from 12 - 4 pm, at New Trail Cycling

* Bring your used athletic shoes to be recycled.  $1 per pair will go toward CORE Foundation's shoe drive initiative helping out kids in our community be healthy and active.  

* Unless you are driving in from out of town and can't make arrangements for a friend to pick up your packet, please come to one of the two assigned pack pick-up times.  This is your chance to have your questions answered which will elevate your experience.  Sorry - we can not possibly mail out race packets.
